Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (ASCVD) Risk for BP Control Target: Explanation and Clinical Context The ASCVD Risk Score estimates the 10-year risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular events, including myocardial infarction, stroke, and cardiovascular death, based on the Pooled Cohort Equations developed by the ACC/AHA 2013 guidelines. It incorporates patient-specific factors including age, sex, race, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, systolic blood pressure, hypertension treatment status, diabetes status, and smoking status. Higher ASCVD risk indicates a need for more intensive blood pressure control.

Patients with ASCVD risk >10% are recommended to aim for <130/80 mmHg, while those with lower risk may use standard targets of <140/90 mmHg. This tool allows clinicians to personalize BP management according to overall cardiovascular risk rather than using a uniform BP threshold.
