It is composed of ten patient reported questions that reflect daily activities and physical capabilities such as bending reaching climbing stairs standing tolerance posture related movements and participation in physically demanding tasks. Each item is scored from zero to ten where zero represents no functional limitation and ten represents maximum difficulty.

The final BASFI score is calculated as the average of all ten responses which makes it a simple reproducible and meaningful measure of functional status. Clinically the BASFI assists physicians in evaluating disease impact monitoring response to therapy and guiding shared clinical decisions.
