Bishop Score Labour Induction Calculator Explanation and Clinical Context The Bishop score is a clinical tool used to assess cervical favorability for labour induction by assigning points to five parameters assessed on digital cervical examination: cervical dilation, effacement, fetal station, cervical consistency, and cervical position. Each parameter contributes a subscore. The total score ranges from zero to thirteen.

Higher scores indicate a cervix that is more favourable or ripe for induction. Clinically a total score of eight or greater is generally considered favourable and associated with a high likelihood of successful vaginal delivery following induction. Scores of six to seven are equivocal and require clinical judgment.

Scores of five or less are considered unfavourable and often prompt cervical ripening before induction or reconsideration of induction timing. The score remains widely used because of its simplicity and practicality despite interobserver variability and limitations in some populations. It can guide the need for cervical ripening agents such as prostaglandins or mechanical methods prior to oxytocin or amniotomy.
