Cardiac Power Output Index (CPO Index) Explanation and Clinical Context Cardiac Power Output Index is a hemodynamic parameter that reflects the amount of hydraulic power generated by the heart per unit of body surface area. It is calculated from Cardiac Power Output, which itself is derived from cardiac output and mean arterial pressure. Because it incorporates both flow and pressure components, the CPO Index provides a comprehensive reflection of cardiac pumping performance.

CPO Index is one of the strongest predictors of outcomes in advanced heart failure and cardiogenic shock because it directly quantifies the heart's ability to deliver effective forward flow. A value lower than 0.4 Watt per square meter is strongly associated with high short term mortality in cardiogenic shock. Values between 0.5 and 0.7 Watt per square meter are generally considered normal.

Clinically, CPO Index is used in the evaluation of shock severity, assessment of response to mechanical circulatory support, and risk stratification in acute heart failure presentations. It also assists in determining escalation to advanced therapies such as ventricular assist devices. In contrast to single parameter markers such as cardiac output or blood pressure alone, the CPO Index combines both and therefore offers better prognostic value.
