FEV1 FVC Ratio Analyzer Explanation and Clinical Context The FEV1 FVC ratio is the proportion of forced expiratory volume in the first second to the forced vital capacity expressed as a percentage. A lower ratio reflects a disproportionate reduction in airflow relative to volume which suggests airflow obstruction. In routine clinical practice a fixed threshold of 70 percent after bronchodilator is commonly used to indicate airflow obstruction.

The lower limit of normal using reference equations offers an age and population specific approach and may avoid misclassification at extremes of age. When available the FEV1 percent predicted is used to stage the severity of airflow limitation and to guide clinical decisions. Always interpret spirometry results in the context of quality checks and clinical presentation and consider post bronchodilator testing when confirming persistent obstruction.
