Left Atrial (LA) Volume Severity Index in Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM): Explanation and Clinical Context The Left Atrial Volume Index (LAVI) is calculated as the left atrial volume (LAV) divided by the body surface area (BSA), providing a body size–adjusted measure of LA enlargement. LA enlargement in HCM reflects chronic diastolic dysfunction, elevated left ventricular filling pressures, and contributes to risk stratification for atrial fibrillation, heart failure, and overall morbidity. Severity grading is defined as: Normal (<34 mL/m²), Mild (34–41 mL/m²), Moderate (42–48 mL/m²), Severe (>48 mL/m²).

This tool helps clinicians quantify structural remodeling of the left atrium in HCM patients and aids in clinical decision-making regarding rhythm management and monitoring.
