Radiation Exposure Cardiovascular Risk Calculator (Medical Workers): Explanation and Clinical Context This calculator estimates the potential cardiovascular risk associated with chronic occupational exposure to ionizing radiation among medical professionals such as interventional cardiologists, electrophysiologists, and radiologic technologists. The model integrates traditional cardiovascular risk modifiers (age, sex, smoking, hypertension) with cumulative radiation dose to approximate excess relative risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Epidemiological evidence suggests that chronic low-to-moderate dose exposure (especially cumulative doses >100 mSv) is associated with modest but measurable increases in ischemic heart disease and cerebrovascular disease incidence.
The primary mechanisms proposed include endothelial dysfunction, microvascular inflammation, and accelerated atherosclerosis due to chronic low-dose radiation. While the absolute risk remains small for most contemporary operators adhering to radiation safety principles (ALARA), long-term monitoring and preventive cardiovascular care are recommended for high-exposure workers. The calculator serves as an educational and awareness tool rather than a diagnostic or clinical decision-making instrument.
