Basal Metabolic Rate is the energy required to maintain essential physiological processes at rest and it forms the largest portion of TDEE.

Physical activity modifies energy needs in a graded manner and therefore the activity factor plays a central role in determining total caloric expenditure. Normal values vary widely because TDEE depends on body size body composition age sex and activity pattern. In clinical nutrition and weight management TDEE helps clinicians determine caloric targets for maintenance weight loss or weight gain.
