AKI–KDIGO Stage Correlation with Heart Failure Mortality: Explanation and Clinical Context Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) defined by KDIGO criteria is strongly associated with increased mortality in patients hospitalized with heart failure. Stage 1 AKI is associated with a modest increase in in-hospital and short-term mortality, whereas Stage 2 and Stage 3 AKI significantly elevate the risk of death. Patients with severe AKI (Stage 3) may have up to five times higher mortality risk compared to patients without AKI.
