Gait Speed Index: Explanation and Clinical Context The Gait Speed Index measures the average walking speed of an individual, calculated as the distance walked (in meters) divided by the time taken (in seconds), expressed in meters per second (m/s). It is a simple, validated measure of functional status and physical performance, particularly in older adults and patients with cardiovascular or frailty conditions. Slower gait speeds (<0.8 m/s) are associated with higher risks of falls, hospitalization, disability, and mortality.

Intermediate gait speeds (0.8–1.0 m/s) indicate moderate risk, while gait speeds >1.0 m/s generally reflect normal functional status and lower risk. This tool allows clinicians to assess patient mobility objectively, track functional decline over time, and stratify risk for adverse outcomes.
