Minute Ventilation and Work of Breathing Explanation and Clinical Context Minute ventilation represents the total volume of air that a person moves in one minute and is calculated by multiplying tidal volume with respiratory rate. It reflects the global mechanical demand placed on the respiratory system. Normal resting minute ventilation is usually between five and eight liters per minute although it can increase significantly during exercise or in respiratory distress.

Work of breathing describes the physical effort required to move air in and out of the lungs. It depends on airway resistance lung compliance chest wall mechanics and ventilatory demand. Clinically an increased work of breathing is seen in conditions such as obstructive lung disease acute respiratory failure and states of high metabolic activity.

Reducing work of breathing is an important target in mechanical ventilation because high respiratory effort can precipitate fatigue patient ventilator dyssynchrony or progression to respiratory failure. The parameters calculated by this tool help clinicians evaluate ventilatory load estimate respiratory fatigue risk and guide supportive interventions such as titration of pressure support oxygen therapy and monitoring in acute care settings.
