Padua Prediction Score (VTE Risk in Medical Patients): Explanation and Clinical Context The Padua Prediction Score is a validated clinical tool used to estimate the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in hospitalized medical patients. Each risk factor is assigned a specific point value based on its contribution to VTE risk. High-risk patients (score >4) are candidates for thromboprophylaxis, whereas low-risk patients (score <4) usually do not require routine prophylaxis.

This scoring system incorporates multiple factors including active cancer, previous VTE, reduced mobility, thrombophilic conditions, recent trauma or surgery, age >70, heart or respiratory failure, acute myocardial infarction or stroke, infection or rheumatologic disorder, obesity, and ongoing hormonal treatment. The Padua Prediction Score facilitates risk stratification, clinical decision-making, and optimized prophylactic strategies in medical inpatients.
