A higher Residual Lung Volume may indicate air trapping caused by conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease asthma or small airway dysfunction while a lower value is uncommon and may occur in restrictive physiology. The predicted Residual Lung Volume is generally calculated using equations adjusted for age height and sex because lung physiology changes with aging and differs between males and females.

Interpretation considers the percentage of Total Lung Capacity where normal values usually fall within twenty to thirty percent of Total Lung Capacity. Deviation from predicted values helps clinicians assess hyperinflation severity evaluate treatment response and guide decisions in pulmonary rehabilitation or preoperative assessment.
