Revised Geneva Score (RGS): Explanation and Clinical Context The Revised Geneva Score is a validated clinical prediction rule used to estimate the pre-test probability of pulmonary embolism (PE) in patients presenting with suspected PE. It uses objective clinical variables including age >65 years, previous DVT or PE, recent surgery or fracture, active cancer, unilateral lower limb pain, hemoptysis, heart rate, pain on deep vein palpation, and collateral superficial veins. Each variable is assigned a weighted score based on its predictive value derived from original validation studies.

The total score stratifies patients into low, intermediate, or high probability for PE, guiding further diagnostic testing such as D-dimer or imaging studies. This tool helps clinicians improve risk stratification and avoid unnecessary imaging.
