MONICA Risk Score (Metabolic Syndrome Outcomes): Explanation and Clinical Context The MONICA Risk Score was developed as part of the WHO MONICA Project to estimate the 10-year risk of cardiovascular events, particularly in individuals with features of metabolic syndrome. It combines age, systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, fasting glucose, and smoking status into a point-based scoring system. The higher the score, the greater the risk for future cardiovascular events, enabling clinicians to identify high-risk individuals and tailor preventive strategies accordingly.
The risk categories (Low, Moderate, High) help in clinical decision-making regarding lifestyle interventions and pharmacotherapy.
