SAVE Score (Survival After Veno-Arterial ECMO): Explanation and Clinical Context The SAVE score is a validated tool designed to predict in-hospital mortality for adult patients undergoing VA-ECMO for refractory cardiogenic shock. It incorporates multiple pre-ECMO variables, including age, body weight, underlying diagnosis, pre-ECMO organ failures, serum bicarbonate, peak inspiratory pressure, and duration of mechanical ventilation prior to ECMO initiation. The total score stratifies patients into mortality risk categories ranging from very low to very high risk, guiding clinicians in patient selection, counseling, and resource allocation.
