TRISS Trauma Injury Severity Score Explanation and Clinical Context TRISS is a validated method for estimating the probability of survival in trauma patients by integrating three established components of trauma assessment which are the Revised Trauma Score the Injury Severity Score and patient age. The model also incorporates the mechanism of trauma which is categorized as blunt or penetrating because outcomes differ significantly between these two categories. The RTS component reflects physiologic derangement.

The ISS provides an anatomical evaluation of injury severity. Age is incorporated because older patients experience higher mortality due to reduced physiologic reserve. TRISS uses a logistic regression model to generate a probability of survival by applying coefficients that differ based on the mechanism of trauma.

The final value estimates the chance of survival at hospital admission and supports decision making triage planning resource allocation and prognostic communication with families. TRISS is widely used in trauma research and trauma center benchmarking to compare performance across institutions.
