Wright equation for estimated glomerular filtration rate explanation and clinical context The Wright equation estimates glomerular filtration rate in milliliters per minute using patient age weight height sex serum creatinine and body surface area computed by the DuBois formula. The equation was derived to improve accuracy of estimation in older adults and in oncology patients and incorporates an age dependent constant a body surface area term and a sex adjustment factor. For calculation serum creatinine should be expressed in micromol per liter.

If serum creatinine is provided in mg per deciliter multiply by 88.4 to convert to micromol per liter before applying the equation. Clinicians should be aware that performance of any estimated glomerular filtration rate equation depends on the patient population and on method of creatinine measurement so use caution when making clinical decisions that require an accurate true measured glomerular filtration rate. For situations where exact glomerular filtration rate is critical consider measured clearance methods such as isotopic techniques.
