Rockall Upper GI Bleeding Score Calculator

Rockall Upper GI Bleeding Score Explanation and Clinical Context The Rockall score estimates risk of adverse outcome after an acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding episode. It combines three clinical variables available at admission that form the pre endoscopic score and two endoscopic variables that produce the complete score. Age contributes up to two points depending on age group.

Hemodynamic status is captured by a shock score based on systolic blood pressure and heart rate. Comorbidity is scored with higher points for severe organ failure or metastatic malignancy. After endoscopy, diagnosis and presence of major stigmata of recent hemorrhage are added to obtain the complete score.

The pre endoscopic score ranges from zero to seven and helps initial triage. The complete score ranges from zero to eleven and is associated with probability of rebleeding and mortality. Higher scores indicate higher risk and may prompt escalation of care including intensive monitoring urgent endoscopy or surgical consultation where appropriate.
