Wells DVT Score: Explanation and Clinical Context The Wells DVT Score is a validated clinical tool used to estimate the probability of deep vein thrombosis in patients presenting with suspected DVT. It uses nine clinical variables including active cancer, immobilization or paralysis, recent surgery or bedridden status, localized tenderness along the deep venous system, swelling of the leg, calf swelling >3 cm, pitting edema, collateral superficial veins, previous DVT, and subtracts points if an alternative diagnosis is at least as likely as DVT. The total score stratifies patients into low, moderate, or high probability categories, guiding further diagnostic testing such as D-dimer testing or imaging with ultrasound.

This tool helps clinicians prioritize patients for imaging and initiate timely management, reducing the risk of complications like pulmonary embolism.
